This intermediate level course was developed using the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health publication, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). Such disabilities are characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior as expressed in conceptual, social, and practical life skills. This course will outline efforts to enhance prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of IDD with a focus on improving outcomes for persons with IDD. Recent research highlights and science advances supported by Eunice Kennedy Shriver IDD Research Centers (IDDRCS) will also be discussed. This continuing education course is appropriate for educators and psychologists.

Brief Summary of Depression in Older Adults

This beginning level course gives a brief overview of depression in older adults. It was developed using material from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The course provides information about demographic trends, definitions and risk factors for depression, prevalence of depression, and the impact and cost of depression. It also provides a brief summary stating why implementation of evidence-based practices (EBTs) is important.
1. Describe characteristics of the older adult population and factors for achieving successful aging.
2. Discuss types, symptoms, and risk factors of depression in older adults.
3. Evaluate the advantages of using evidence-based practices to improve the health and functioning of older adults with depression.
4. Identify the various types of EBTs used to treat depression in the older adult population.
