Responding to Mental Health Crises


Course Description

These guidelines were developed by a panel of mental health professionals and advocacy leaders, including some who have experienced serious mental illness themselves. The goal is to provide pertinent information for the variety of interveners who come in contact with people who are experiencing serious emotional or mental health related crises.

Course Objectives
1. Apply practical strategies to current professional practices in order to improve existing protocols for crisis management or to develop crisis intervention standards.

2. Summarize the development of mental health crisis interventions that are guided by practices consistent with recovery and resilience.

3. Recognize the ten essential values inherent in an appropriate crisis response and determine how they can be applied to crisis care providers.

4. Identify principals that are key in insuring appropriate responses to mental health crises.
