No longer are Dunkin’ Donuts’ coffees or energy drinks like Monster or Red Bull strong enough to accompany college students on their late-night study binges. Instead, today’s students have moved on to a stronger tonic – the prescription drug known as Adderall.
Adderall, a medication intended for people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), is so appealing to college students because of its abilities to increase alertness, to focus and energy levels, which enables them to complete assignments quicker, with fewer distractions.
"Students are under a lot of pressure to maintain good grades and get a job out of college," said Sue Sandor, a Physician Assistant at Quinnipiac University’s York Hill student health services. "Many students also work part-time or take on a number of student life activities. Often, this is more than they can handle."
